Project Type
Relocating for the specific purpose of being within walking distance of their synagogue and community, the client's home was designed to celebrate their Jewish faith and heritage. One of their few design requirements was the home had to be in keeping with the general massing & language of the neighborhood. A key element of the project was having the entire roof float just above the walls on a continuous band of clerestory glass like a kippah over one’s head. The building masonry and planters were intentionally chosen to resonate with the Jerusalem stone of the Western Wall and paired with corner glass to give the expression of strength and delicacy while blurring boundaries. Twelve thresholds organized the building from front to back. But the main idea was to create a courtyard, a space in between the built form, where the client and their extended family could come together to celebrate their annual festivals, where they could garden, and where the rest of the house could face as a precious jewel at the heart of their home.
